How to use these templates

Every template follows the same skeleton recommended across provider guides: ROLE (who the model is), TASK (what to do), CONTEXT (the material and constraints), and FORMAT (how to return it). That structure is why they generalize across models and use cases.

Replace the [BRACKETS] with your specifics. The more detail you add, the better the output — vague placeholders produce vague results. Anything marked optional can be deleted if it doesn't apply.

Frequently Asked Questions

Do I have to replace every bracket?

Replace every [BRACKET] that applies and delete the lines that don't. Leaving raw placeholders like [TONE] in the prompt produces generic output — the brackets are prompts to you, not the model.

Do these work in ChatGPT, Claude, and Gemini?

Yes. They follow the role/task/context/format structure all three vendors recommend. Minor tweaks help — Claude favors XML-style tags for delimiters, Gemini responds well to explicit step decomposition. See Claude's docs and Gemini's strategies.

When should I use a generator tool instead of a template?

Use a template when you want full control and already know your inputs. Use a generator (like the ChatGPT Prompt Generator) when you want a tailored, well-structured prompt produced for you, or when you're not sure how to phrase the task.

How do I keep templates from hallucinating facts?

Use the grounded templates (22 and 26): paste the source, tell the model to answer only from it, and require quoted citations. Prompting reduces but doesn't eliminate hallucinations — see Reducing AI Hallucinations.

Can I save these as reusable system prompts?

Yes, and you should for anything you run repeatedly. Put the durable parts (role, format, constraints) in the system prompt and pass only the variable input in the user message. This is cleaner and, with prompt caching, cheaper.
